Why go

Painting of the same period and quality as Ajanta, in caves almost nobody visits, in a village where a family has been block-printing cloth with river-washed natural dyes for generations. Two living heritages in one stop.

Nine caves were cut into the Vindhyan sandstone above the Baghini river in the fifth and sixth centuries. The murals in Caves 3, 4 and 5 are contemporary with the later Ajanta paintings and by some accounts from the same tradition of painters. The rock proved unstable and much of the painting was removed for conservation in the 1980s; the originals are now in the museum at Gwalior and in the site museum here, with reproductions in situ. Separately, Bagh village is the home of Bagh print — block-printed cloth using natural dyes fixed by washing in the Baghini river, whose mineral content is said to be what gives the reds and blacks their depth. The Khatri family here holds a National Award for it.

Monsoon visit. Everything was green and the water was full, but the steps were lethal and I nearly went over twice. Stunning, and I would not bring children.

Tip: Monsoon is the best and the most dangerous time. Proper shoes.

A ruined Afghan capital spread over a 13 km plateau — the most romantic set of monuments in India, and unrecognisably good in monsoon.
