Why go
A boat ride between white marble cliffs on green water, and a waterfall whose name means smoke-cascade because that is literally what it produces. On a full-moon night the boats run late and the marble glows.
The gorge is Proterozoic dolomitic marble, and the Narmada has been cutting it for a very long time. Bhedaghat's other claim is the Chausath Yogini temple on the hill above — a tenth-century circular temple of 64 yogini shrines, one of only four such temples surviving in India. The boatmen who row the gorge have a hereditary trade and an inherited patter of rock-shape jokes that is, in its own way, an intangible heritage worth the fare.

Carried a torch on the advice here and it made the difference. Half the interior is pitch dark and phone lights are not enough.
Tip: Bring an actual torch, not a phone.

Four hours from Bhopal each way for this and I would do it again. Almost nobody here on a Saturday, which still surprises me.
Tip: Start at 5 am if you are doing it as a day trip.

Beautiful, but the plastic around the parking area is depressing. Carried out what I could. The site itself is clean once you are past the entrance.
Tip: Carry a bag out with you. It genuinely helps.

Went on a Tuesday morning and had the place almost to myself. The caretaker walked me round for twenty minutes without being asked and knew far more than the signage does. Give yourself longer than the app suggests — I stayed nearly three hours.
Tip: Weekday mornings are empty. Weekends are a different place entirely.
