Chanderi gives you a fort, a Mughal-era caravanserai gateway that leads nowhere, Jain rock colossi, and a living handloom tradition you can watch on the loom — in a town small enough to walk and quiet enough to think in.
Chanderi sat on the trade route between Malwa and the Deccan and was fought over accordingly — Paramaras, the Delhi Sultanate, Malwa, Babur, the Bundelas, the Scindias. Babur took the fort in 1528 and recorded it in the Baburnama. The Koshak Mahal, built by Mahmud Khilji in 1445, was meant to be a seven-storey palace and only two storeys of one quarter were ever built. The weaving is older than all of the monuments: Chanderi cloth is mentioned in the Maasir-i-Alamgiri, and the characteristic transparency comes from using unbleached, ungummed yarn. Around 3,500 handlooms still work in the town.

Last mile: The town is walkable end to end. Autos for Koshak Mahal and Khandargiri, about ₹300 for both.
The fort is a steep climb. The weaving quarter and the town monuments are walkable and level.

The guide was excellent and cost less than a coffee in a city. Do not skip it — I walked round once alone first and missed most of what matters.
Tip: Hire the local guide. ₹600 well spent.

Beautiful, but the plastic around the parking area is depressing. Carried out what I could. The site itself is clean once you are past the entrance.
Tip: Carry a bag out with you. It genuinely helps.

A Bundela capital frozen in the sixteenth century — palaces, riverside cenotaphs and a temple where Rama is worshipped as a reigning king.
