Why go

Dhamnar has a monolithic temple cut from living rock in the manner of Ellora's Kailasa, a fourteen-metre reclining Buddha, and fifty-one caves. It receives fewer visitors in a year than Ellora gets in a morning.

The Buddhist caves were cut between the fourth and seventh centuries — viharas, chaityas, stupas and a large reclining Buddha in parinirvana. Several centuries later, the Dharmnath temple was carved out of the same hill as a single monolith, excavated downward from the rock surface the way Kailasa at Ellora was, complete with a courtyard and subsidiary shrines. It is one of only a handful of monolithic temples in India. The site was noted by Alexander Cunningham in the nineteenth century and then largely left alone. It remains unfenced, unlit, and almost entirely unvisited.

Arrived expecting fifteen minutes and stayed two hours. The detail rewards slowing down, which is not something you can tell from photographs.

Tip: Budget more time than you think.

The guide was excellent and cost less than a coffee in a city. Do not skip it — I walked round once alone first and missed most of what matters.

Tip: Hire the local guide. ₹600 well spent.
