Why go
Kanha is the most beautiful of the central Indian tiger reserves — vast meadows ringed by sal, and a conservation success story that brought the barasingha back from 66 animals to over 800.
Kanha was declared a national park in 1955 and became one of the first nine Project Tiger reserves in 1973. Its real achievement is not the tiger but the hard-ground barasingha, Rucervus duvaucelii branderi, a swamp deer subspecies that exists nowhere else on earth. In 1970 there were 66 left. Intensive protection of the Kanha meadows brought them back past 800. Kipling never actually visited, but the Seoni country he wrote about is the same forest, continuous with Pench to the south-west.

Monsoon visit. Everything was green and the water was full, but the steps were lethal and I nearly went over twice. Stunning, and I would not bring children.
Tip: Monsoon is the best and the most dangerous time. Proper shoes.

Facilities are basically non-existent, which the listing is honest about. Carry water and use the toilet before you leave the last town.
Tip: No water, no toilets, no signal. Plan accordingly.
