Why go

Twenty-five surviving temples out of an original eighty-five, covered end to end in sculpture that treats gods, musicians, farmers and lovers with exactly the same attention. Nothing else in India documents an entire eleventh-century society this completely in stone.

Built between 950 and 1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty, the Khajuraho temples were abandoned after the thirteenth century and swallowed by forest for six hundred years, which is precisely why they survived. A British engineer, T.S. Burt, was carried here by palanquin in 1838 on a rumour from his bearers and published the first account. The erotic sculpture the site is famous for accounts for under a tenth of the carving; the rest is court life, warfare, trade and dance. The Western Group holds the masterpiece, Kandariya Mahadeva, with 646 figures on a single temple.

Four hours from Bhopal each way for this and I would do it again. Almost nobody here on a Saturday, which still surprises me.

Tip: Start at 5 am if you are doing it as a day trip.

Facilities are basically non-existent, which the listing is honest about. Carry water and use the toilet before you leave the last town.

Tip: No water, no toilets, no signal. Plan accordingly.

The guide was excellent and cost less than a coffee in a city. Do not skip it — I walked round once alone first and missed most of what matters.

Tip: Hire the local guide. ₹600 well spent.

Took my parents, both in their seventies. The main section was manageable but the upper part was not — we turned back. Would have liked to know that in advance.

Tip: The upper section has no handrail and uneven steps. Plan for it.

Worth the detour, genuinely. The road in is rough for the last stretch and I would not take a low-clearance car after rain, but the site itself is in better condition than I expected.

Tip: Fill up fuel before you turn off the highway — there is nothing after that.

Went on a Tuesday morning and had the place almost to myself. The caretaker walked me round for twenty minutes without being asked and knew far more than the signage does. Give yourself longer than the app suggests — I stayed nearly three hours.

Tip: Weekday mornings are empty. Weekends are a different place entirely.
