Why go
The Bhasma Aarti at 4 am is the most intense ritual in Indian temple practice, and Ujjain has been a sacred city since the Mahabharata. The rebuilt Mahakal Lok corridor has turned a cramped temple visit into a walkable kilometre of sculpture.
Ujjain sits on the prime meridian of classical Indian astronomy — the Hindu prime meridian passed through here, and the Jantar Mantar observatory nearby still tracks it. Mahakaleshwar is dakshinamukhi, south-facing, unique among the Jyotirlingas, and the deity is regarded as the ruler of the city itself. The Bhasma Aarti uses ash, traditionally from a cremation ground, in a ritual performed at 4 am every day without exception. Kalidasa wrote about this city; the Simhastha Kumbh Mela draws tens of millions here every twelve years.

Arrived expecting fifteen minutes and stayed two hours. The detail rewards slowing down, which is not something you can tell from photographs.
Tip: Budget more time than you think.

Worth the detour, genuinely. The road in is rough for the last stretch and I would not take a low-clearance car after rain, but the site itself is in better condition than I expected.
Tip: Fill up fuel before you turn off the highway — there is nothing after that.

Went on a Tuesday morning and had the place almost to myself. The caretaker walked me round for twenty minutes without being asked and knew far more than the signage does. Give yourself longer than the app suggests — I stayed nearly three hours.
Tip: Weekday mornings are empty. Weekends are a different place entirely.

Beautiful, but the plastic around the parking area is depressing. Carried out what I could. The site itself is clean once you are past the entrance.
Tip: Carry a bag out with you. It genuinely helps.

Second visit, this time at sunset instead of midday, and it is a completely different experience. The light does most of the work here.
Tip: Come in the last ninety minutes of daylight.
