Cave 5's Varaha relief is a 4 m panel of the boar avatar raising the earth goddess from the ocean, carved around 400 CE, and it is a masterpiece by any standard anywhere. It is 13 km from Sanchi and gets a fraction of the visitors.
The caves were cut under Chandragupta II around 400 CE, and one inscription names his minister Virasena, who says he came here with the king. That makes this one of the very few Gupta monuments that can be securely dated and connected to a named patron. The Varaha panel in Cave 5 is political as much as religious: the boar raising the earth is read as Chandragupta raising and unifying India, with the ocean gods and the assembled sages watching. There is also a passage cut into the hilltop that aligns with the summer solstice sunrise, and a rock-cut water channel system that still works after sixteen hundred years.

Vidisha is 4 km away and has a railway station on the Bhopal–Bina line. Bhopal is 60 km, about 90 minutes. Easiest as a stop on the Sanchi day trip.
Last mile: Autos from Vidisha are ₹200–250. The approach road is metalled to the base of the caves.
Lower caves are reached on a level path. The hilltop caves need a short climb.

Took my parents, both in their seventies. The main section was manageable but the upper part was not — we turned back. Would have liked to know that in advance.
Tip: The upper section has no handrail and uneven steps. Plan for it.
