Some of the oldest art in India, still on the rock where it was made, 30,000 years of continuous human occupation in one hillside — and you can walk up to within a metre of it.
V.S. Wakankar spotted the formations from a train in 1957 and came back on foot. What he found was one of the densest concentrations of prehistoric art anywhere in the world: over 750 shelters, 500 of them painted, with occupation layers running back to the Acheulean. The paintings themselves span from around 10,000 BCE to the medieval, and you can read the change in them — hunting scenes with bows give way to cattle and riders, then to horsemen with swords. The white ones are generally the oldest; the red-and-white figures are later. One shelter, Auditorium Cave, has a Lower Palaeolithic occupation floor.

45 km south of Bhopal on NH-46 towards Hoshangabad, about an hour. Obaidullaganj is the nearest station, 7 km. No public transport up the 3 km approach road from the highway.
Last mile: A 3 km metalled road from the highway to the car park. Taxis from Bhopal charge around ₹2,000 for the round trip with waiting.
A 1.7 km circuit on a made path with steps and rock scrambles at several shelters.

Arrived expecting fifteen minutes and stayed two hours. The detail rewards slowing down, which is not something you can tell from photographs.
Tip: Budget more time than you think.

Four hours from Bhopal each way for this and I would do it again. Almost nobody here on a Saturday, which still surprises me.
Tip: Start at 5 am if you are doing it as a day trip.

Worth the detour, genuinely. The road in is rough for the last stretch and I would not take a low-clearance car after rain, but the site itself is in better condition than I expected.
Tip: Fill up fuel before you turn off the highway — there is nothing after that.

The guide was excellent and cost less than a coffee in a city. Do not skip it — I walked round once alone first and missed most of what matters.
Tip: Hire the local guide. ₹600 well spent.

Went on a Tuesday morning and had the place almost to myself. The caretaker walked me round for twenty minutes without being asked and knew far more than the signage does. Give yourself longer than the app suggests — I stayed nearly three hours.
Tip: Weekday mornings are empty. Weekends are a different place entirely.

Beautiful, but the plastic around the parking area is depressing. Carried out what I could. The site itself is clean once you are past the entrance.
Tip: Carry a bag out with you. It genuinely helps.
